Languages offered in primary

The importance of languages

Located at the heart of Europe, Vauban welcomes pupils from nearly 50 nationalities and who speak more than 30 different languages.

Multilingualism and openness to the world and to different cultures are among the key priorities of our school.

Language teaching

All of Vauban’s pupils learn two languages, one of which is English. At kindergarten, they are introduced to Luxembourgish. In CP, they have the choice between continuing in this language until CM2 or starting German.

All modern foreign languages are taught in small groups. Emphasis is placed on developing pupils’ spoken language skills.

The teaching objectives are defined beyond the official French educational directives and in accordance with the broad guidelines of AEFE.

Enhanced English provision, accredited by the PARLE label

As an AEFE-accredited PARLE institution, Vauban offers a tailored and enhanced foreign-language pathway from CE1 to Seconde, with increased teaching hours in English and the weekly teaching of one subject in English.

The aim is to strengthen all our pupils’ English language skills, to open up opportunities for entry into the British international section or one of the European sections, and to support them in preparing for Cambridge and/or IELTS certification.

Subjects taught in English

The teaching of language & literature follows the British curriculum and pedagogical approaches. History and geography meet the requirements of the French curriculum, but the subjects are explored through examples from English-speaking countries.

  • Admission

This section is intended for pupils with proven English-language skills who show a strong interest in the literature and culture of English-speaking countries.

Admission covers a three-year cycle. At the end of 6ème, students’ English proficiency is assessed to determine whether they can continue in this section.

Candidates take a language test in the spring, and admission is granted following review of the students’ records.

    Criteria

    • Strong command of fundamental skills (reading acquisition)
    • English skills exceeding the expectations for the end of cycle 2 (CE2)
    • Good oral participation
    • Good autonomy in managing personal work
    • Interest in reading in all its forms
    • Curiosity and open-mindedness
    • Personal motivation for this learning
    • Relative ease and spontaneity in speaking English
    • Ability to read short, simple texts in English
    • Ability to learn history and geography in English

Language partnerships

Every year, Vauban establishes partnerships and collaborations with schools in Luxembourg, Europe and Asia as part of the language programme from kindergarten to the end of high school.

These connections promote authentic communication in the languages studied by the students. They take the form of in-person meetings at schools or other locations, video-conference discussions or exchanges of e-mails and letters on shared projects. These immersive experiences also allow pupils to discover different ways of life at school and in society, with the aim of fostering their cultural and international awareness.
